Ahed is One of 300 Children Imprisoned by the Israeli Military

Ahed Tamimi, 16-year-old, was arrested by the Israeli army a month ago, was denied bail, leaving her to spend the rest of her trial in prison. Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for her immediate release.
Ahed faces various charges in an Israeli military court stemming from an altercation outside of her family home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank and faces up to 14 years in prison. That incident, which was caught on video and went viral, took place shortly after an Israeli soldier shot Ahed’s 15-year-old cousin in the face with a rubber coated steel bullet, leaving him seriously injured.
“In a military detention system where fair trial guarantees are denied and nearly three out of four Palestinian children experience some form of physical violence after arrest, it is clear that detaining and prosecuting children in Israeli military courts has little to do with justice,” said Brad Parker, International Advocacy Officer and Staff Attorney for Defence for Children International.
“Ahed’s pretrial detention, rather than the exception, is the norm in the Israeli military detention system where international law is routinely disregarded, including that detention must only be a measure of last resort. It is clear that detaining and prosecuting Palestinian children in Israeli military courts has little to do with justice,” said Brad Parker, International Advocacy Officer and Staff Attorney for Defense for Children International Palestine. “Israeli military law denies basic fair trial rights and ill-treatment of child detainees is widespread with nearly three out of four Palestinian children experience some form of physical violence after arrest.”

75% of Palestinian children interviewed reported enduring physical violence by Israeli forces after being arrested.
